Named after French navigator and native to South America, Bougainvillea is fast-growing with beautiful bracts and lovely visual appeal. What look like blooms actually surround the flowers. 

While moderately difficult to care for due to its need for excellent drainage, bougainvillea is an evergreen vine making it ideal for training and bonsai as it will grow horizontally and vertically. It can be pruned nearly year-round; make sure to seal all cuts to prevent rot. Keep a close eye on watering as bougainvillea love dry conditions and hate “wet feet.” 

Bougainvillea needs full sun 6-8 hours a day (but not the burning type of afternoon sun) so take care with placement. This bonsai is hardy to only 40 degrees and should be brought indoors during cold snaps or winter. As long as the plant is kept healthy and not subjected to wet conditions bougainvillea bonsai is pest-resistant. Cut blooms short when they fade to prevent rot.
